Salt River Project (SRP)

SRP is the third-largest public power utility in the country and serves more than 935,000 electric customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Founded on the principals of resource stewardship, SRP strives to preserve the balance between serving growing customer needs and protecting natural resources. SRP has a long-term view of sustainability initiatives as demonstrated by its programs and services, including using renewable technologies to produce cleaner power, implementing changes to improve operations, and assisting our customers in increasing their energy efficiency.

SRP's Board of Directors set voluntary goals in 2004 that include renewable energy resources and energy efficiency measures. Amended in 2006, the approved portfolio sets a target of 15% of SRP retail sales to be met through sustainable resources by fiscal year 2025. As of the end of fiscal year 2010, SRP achieved 7.47% of its retail sales from sustainable resources.

SRP pursues innovative and effective renewable energy solutions by regularly expanding its energy portfolio to include a diverse mix of renewable energy technologies through a variety of resources including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydroelectricity. Ultimately, SRP’s goal is to provide the maximum sustainable energy benefit for the lowest reasonable cost to SRP’s customers.

SRP obtains solar power resources by partnering with communities and businesses, contracting with solar power providers, installing SRP-owned systems, and subsidizing customer-owned systems through the SRP EarthWise™ Solar Energy Program.

SRP EarthWiseTM Residential Solar Electric Program

SRP has set aside funding for a total of 4.5 megawatts (MW) of residential solar electric installations through April 30, 2012. The incentive level is offered at $1.35 per watt, up to 5 kilowatt for the first 2 MW of installations and adjusts to $1.20 per watt for another 1.5 MW of installations, ending at $1.00 per watt for the remaining 1 MW of installations.

SRP does prorate the incentive payment for leased systems where the lease term is less than 20 years. For example, a system with a 10-year lease would only receive 50% of the possible available incentive for that system's size.

Prior to installing a solar electric system, please consider the following:

  • Contractor Selection. Make sure you obtain two-to-three quotes with references before choosing your contractor.
  • System Type. There are different types of systems and costs can vary widely among contractors. You should research the system types available before selecting a particular system.
  • Maintenance. Solar electric systems will require maintenance, so know the system's recommended maintenance schedule and take these costs into consideration.
  • Panel Location. It is important that the panels receive the greatest amount of sunlight. So you should consider factors that will impact the sun's ability to shine on the panels including shading from obstructions (such as trees), the tilt angle of the panels, and the direction the panels are facing (southern exposure is best).
  • Mounting. The method of mounting for some systems could impact roof warranties and home insurance policies.
  • Homeowner Association (HOA) Rules. Homeowner association rules may affect system selection and mounting, so review your plans with your association prior to installation.

SRP EarthWiseTM Residential Solar Water Heater Program

SRP has set aside funding for a total of $2 million of residential solar water heater incentive payments through April 30, 2012. SRP residential customers who install a solar water heater may qualify for an incentive payment of $0.45 per kilowatt-hour of the annual energy savings realized by the system. SRP bases the level of energy savings on the OG-300 rating and the orientation of the solar collector panels. SRP provides prorated incentives for systems in which the solar collectors are not installed in an optimal location.

Non-Residential Incentive Program Information

The goal of the SRP EarthWise™ Commercial Solar Energy Programs is to encourage the use of solar power, while reducing the costs of installing a new solar electric or solar water heating system.

SRP’s EarthWise Commercial Solar Electric Program provides customers with the following options:

  • Small solar electric systems with a one-time incentive.
  • Large solar electric systems with a production-based incentive.

SRP’s EarthWise Commercial Solar Water Heating Program provides customers with three options as it relates to installing a solar water heater:
  • OG-300 rated solar water heaters with a one-time incentive.
  • Standard solar water heaters with a one-time incentive.
  • Solar water heaters for swimming pools with a one-time incentive.

SRP EarthWiseTM Commercial Solar Electric Program

SRP offers two incentive options for commercial customers who are installing a solar electric system:

Small solar electric systems receive a one-time incentive.
SRP has set aside funding for a total of 1.1 megawatts of small commercial solar electric installations through April 30, 2012. The incentive level is offered at $1.35 per watt, up to $40,500 for the first 500 kilowatts (kW) of installations and adjusts to $1.20 per watt for another 400 kW of installations, ending at $1.00 per watt for the remaining 200 kW of installations.

SRP does prorate the incentive payment for leased systems where the lease term is less than 20 years. For example, a system with a 10-year lease would only receive 50% of the possible available incentive for that system's size.

Large solar electric systems receive a production-based incentive (PBI).
Commercial SRP customers who install a large solar electric system that is between 30 kW and 600 kW in size may qualify for a PBI incentive. Under this program, customers receive a fixed incentive rate for energy produced by their solar electric system for a period of 20 years. SRP has set aside funding for a total of 6 megawatts (MW) of large commercial solar electric installations through April 30, 2012. The incentive level is offered at $0.12 per kilowatt-hour of metered generation for the first 2 MW of installations and adjusts to $0.11 per kilowatt-hour for another 2 MW of installations, ending at $0.10 per kilowatt-hour for the remaining 2 MW of installations.
